PSEO Support Specialist

Summary

Support student success in online Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) classes, through partnership with TORCH staff, AmeriCorps members, Carleton tutors, and Riverland Community College professors and professional staff.  

This is a part-time position, estimated at 20-25 hours per week (Monday-Friday, approximately 10:30-3:30) from August 20-December 21 and January 7-May 10, 2019.  

Tasks

TORCH PSEO Program Coordination

  • Work with leaders at Riverland Community College (a primary TORCH partner) to implement and coordinate college courses to be offered online for Northfield Public Schools juniors and seniors
  • Promote courses with youth and support them through the enrollment and registration process, including completion of required standardized testing (Accuplacer) and necessary paperwork
  • Coordinate with Northfield High School counselors to balance students’ schedules and ensure students are on track towards high school graduation
  • Coordinate and engage a pool of volunteer tutors from Carleton College to work with youth taking college courses
  • Communicate with Riverland faculty members in cases where additional academic support and intervention(s) are necessary
  • Supervise, take attendance, and engage with students during daily, mandatory PSEO study halls (estimated to be during periods 5-7 for the 2018-2019 academic year)
  • Track assignment completion and progress toward satisfactory grades for all PSEO students throughout the semester
  • Meet with all students for weekly academic advising, concentrating especially on those who are struggling with any aspect of their PSEO class(es)
  • Provide tutoring and/or coordinate tutors to help students understand assignment instructions, write papers, research topics, and successfully engage with professors via email and other electronic means

Career and College Readiness Services

  • Help students develop good habits of checking emails and responding to professors, or reaching out with late work or questions
  • Work with each youth to create an individual plan that identifies areas of need, interventions, goals, and future aspirations
  • Help students understand the processes surrounding college transcripts, transfer credits, and other areas that are not intuitive for first-generation college students

Additional tasks

  • Assist HCI staff, school partners, and other community stakeholders with additional efforts to engage the Northfield community as opportunities for collaboration arise
  • Assist with grant-required record-keeping, writing, management and reporting
  • Collaborate with TORCH Directors and Northfield High School counseling team to ensure seamless support for youth graduating from Northfield High School or the Northfield Area Learning Center after PSEO participation

Qualifications

  • Experience with college level coursework; post-secondary degree preferred
  • Enthusiasm for and previous experience working with youth ages 15-21
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) and Google Suite
  • Highly organized with superior attention to detail
  • Excellent ability to multi-task and troubleshoot issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience adapting style and methods of communication in order to effectively engage youth
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as a member of a team
  • Capable of completing work on time in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Ability to work early morning, late afternoon and evening hours
  • Ability to travel to Owatonna or Twin Cities for meetings, trainings, or to pick up books and supplies
  • Willingness to maintain the standards, carry out the purpose, and adhere to the policies of the Healthy Community Initiative
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • Familiarity with HCI (and its programs), Northfield Public Schools, and MNSCU College System and programs preferred
