Prevention & Youth Leadership Coordinator

20-40 hours per week – job-share opportunities exist if candidate prefers less than full-time hours

Summary

Provide staff support to HCI-supported coalitions and programs, including committees and work groups of the Rice County Chemical & Mental Health Coalition. Lead and support school- and community-based prevention efforts designed to promote health and well-being for Rice County youth. Support the launch of the Faribault Youth on Boards initiative, placing high school students on local boards and commissions.

Tasks

  • Rice County Chemical & Mental Health Coalition (RCCMHC)
    • Convene partners, prepare agendas & meeting materials, and write & disseminate meeting notes for designated teams of the RCCMHC, including in the areas of mental health and prevention/promotion
    • Follow up on action steps between meetings and maintain consistent communication by email, phone, and in-person (as needed) with members
    • Maintain the Rice County Chemical Health Resource Directory
  • School- & Community-Based Prevention Work
    • Serve as the lead on the Rice County STOPS grant, including completing annual application and grant reports
    • Provide staff support to the Faribault Public Schools Mental Health Team
    • Work with school partners (middle school, high school, and colleges) to implement annual youth social norms marketing campaigns at the middle and high school levels
    • Select/Develop and implement community education campaigns around underage drinking and the local social host ordinances
    • Support three trainings per year for parents, teachers, and/or youth development staff on evidence-based topics related to youth alcohol abuse prevention
    • Provide staff support to the Youth Sports Collaborative, helping to increase the number of low-income youth taking part in local youth sports associations
    • Assist with the identification and promotion of evidence-based alcohol prevention curricula and programs for use in Rice County schools
    • Work with school partners to administer a required annual youth survey about youth drug and alcohol use
  • Faribault Youth on Boards
    • Partner with local school, city, and nonprofit entities to identify and secure placement opportunities for youth interested in serving on boards
    • Lead annual recruitment and selection process for high school students interested in serving on local boards and commissions
    • Provide orientation sessions (both general and tailored to each board or commission) for incoming youth to outline expectations, resources, and support
    • Provide training and consultation to adults on boards regarding effective strategies to engage youth
    • Facilitate communication between the identified boards/commissions and the youth serving on them
    • Develop and arrange monthly sessions for youth serving on boards and commissions to receive additional education on city government and municipal processes, local issues, board best practices, etc.
    • Ensure frequent communication with each youth serving on a board or commission to debrief about her/his experience and address any issues, including attendance and engagement at meetings
    • Implement annual evaluation of the program, soliciting input from youth participants, board chairs, government leaders, and other stakeholders
  • Additional tasks
    • Explore and promote additional best practice and evidence-based prevention efforts to promote youth health and well-being
    • Assist with grant record-keeping, writing, management, and reporting
    • Work with other staff on generating content for communications efforts

Required qualities

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience
  • 2-5 years of experience in coalition building and youth development
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) and Google Suite
  • Experience working directly with youth
  • Experience facilitating public meetings
  • Highly organized with superior attention to detail
  • Excellent ability to multi-task and troubleshoot issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience adapting style and methods of communication in order to effectively engage youth and community members
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as a member of a team
  • Capable of completing work on time in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Ability to work some late afternoon and evening hours
  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license and the ability to travel within Rice County
  • Willingness to maintain the standards, carry out the purpose, and adhere to the policies of the Northfield Healthy Community Initiative
  • Maintenance of a cell phone is an expectation of employment

Preferred qualities

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or Somali
  • Familiarity with HCI and its programs
  • Familiarity with organizations and resources in Rice County
  • Knowledge in the fields of asset-based youth development, collective impact, and/or Results-Based Facilitation
  • Experience in marketing, communications, grant writing and reporting
