Family Engagement Navigator

Summary

Bilingual individual who will work with families of elementary school or middle school youth to foster increased school connectedness and to address any issues of school attendance. The Navigator will also monitor and report places within the schools and local systems where children and families experience challenges and raise these up for system leaders.

Up to three Navigators will be hired for the 2020-21 school year (one working at each of two elementary schools, as well as one at the Northfield Middle School). Hours for each position will vary from 15-30 hours per week, depending on the school building and the selected candidates’ preferences. It may be possible to combine positions for full-time work.

Tasks

  • Work with school staff and district leadership to support the identification of students who are chronically absent
  • Work directly with a cohort of approximately 25-30 students (and their families) to understand obstacles impacting school attendance and implement strategies to overcome these challenges
  • Track cohort students’ attendance
  • Work with school staff for support and interventions, including connecting a student to engaging enrichment activities
  • Connect families with eligible community resources and social services, including assisting with required paperwork (as needed) and serving as a liaison to local agencies like the Community Action Center and HealthFinders
  • Work with school leadership to help foster additional connections between families and the schools
  • Conduct home visits and individual meetings
  • Recognize and celebrate successes of student and families
  • In circumstances when a school moves to a distance-learning model, help facilitate continued connection between students/families in the cohort and school activities
  • Identify barriers within local systems and regularly share this feedback with heads of these systems
  • Build effective relationships with individuals and organizations central to the work of the Navigator
  • Implement additional best-practice attendance and school connectedness efforts from the Attendance Works framework (attendanceworks.org)
  • Advocate for systems-level change
  • Evaluate and track data on the effectiveness of the Navigator pilot

Required qualities

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or Somali
  • Previous experience in community organizing, education, and/or family engagement
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Highly organized with superior attention to detail
  • Excellent ability to multi-task and troubleshoot issues
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as a member of a team
  • Capable of completing work on time in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Ability to understand and work with different cultures and backgrounds
  • Ability to work select evening and weekend hours
  • Passion for equity and social justice
  • Willingness to maintain the standards, carry out the purpose, and adhere to the policies of the Northfield Healthy Community Initiative
  • Maintenance of a cell phone is an expectation of employment

Preferred qualities

  • Familiarity with Rice County organizations and resources
