Charged by the City Council with ensuring a youth voice in civic affairs, the Northfield Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) has been working to help guarantee that issues impacting Northfield’s young people are front and center in the 2012 elections. This fall, the MYC has:
- Held local candidate forums on issues important to youth
- Filmed candidate videos to introduce youth to local candidates
- Organized a Youth Vote at the Northfield High School
Each of these efforts is described below.
A special thank you to the Youthprise Foundation, the Sheltering Arms Foundation, the America’s Promise Alliance, and the Northfield Area United Way for supporting these efforts to empower and give voice to Northfield youth.
Candidate Forums on Issues Important to Youth
On October 28, 2012, the Mayor’s Youth Council hosted two very successful candidate forums at the Northfield High School. Both were entirely youth moderated and each was attended by more than 300 local youth! The first featured candidates for the office of Northfield School Board and the second included candidates running for Mayor of Northfield and the City Council at-large position. The Northfield News ran a front-page story on the forums that can be found HERE.
Many thanks to the League of Women Voters Northfield-Cannon Falls for their support and guidance in putting together these successful events!

Videos to Introduce Candidates to Local Youth
The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) also invited each of the candidates running for Mayor of Northfield, School Board, and City Council at-large to provide one-minute responses to the question of what they would do, if elected, to benefit Northfield youth. The videos were shown at the Northfield High School during school announcements during the week of October 22.
Check out these informative videos below before you cast your vote on November 6. A huge round of applause to MYC members Chen Ye and Logan Regnier for their work on filming and editing these videos.
Note: The intro sections of each video intentionally do not have sound, but the candidate interviews obviously do!
