| Local youth writes powerful guest column |
This school year, through its mini-grants program, HCI has been able to fund a number of requests from students in the Northfield High School Service-Learning class, led by Sarah Swan-McDonald. The mini-grants have helped to cover costs related to the students’ service-learning projects in the Northfield community.
One of the mini-grant recipients recently wrote a powerful guest column for the Northfield News, discussing the impact her service-learning project had on her future plans.

| HCI invites board nominations |
The Northfield Healthy Community Initiative (HCI) is currently seeking nominations for positions on the HCI Board. HCI expects to have at least one open board position beginning in September 2008. HCI board members serve three-year terms. In addition, the HCI Board will have at least one additional board opening for a local middle or high school student.
Formed in 1992, HCI is a coalition run by a board of community leaders, youth, parents, and school personnel. HCI’s mission is to “promote an environment that strengthens the networks of support that will nurture competent, caring and principled youth.” To achieve this, HCI does not operate or manage its own programs. Instead, HCI works with community partners to foster collaboration and to support community-driven efforts that benefit Northfield youth and families.
The HCI Board meets from 7:30-9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month.
For more information on the HCI Board or to nominate yourself or someone else for the board, please contact Jim Blaha (HCI Board member) at 664-3550 or by email. Nominations should be received by Friday, June 20, 2008. |

| Northfield High School drivers reminded to "BUCKLE-UP" |
Bright yellow “BUCKLE-UP” messages serve as a reminder to cars exiting the Northfield High School and ARTech parking lots. The messages were stenciled by the Northfield Union of Youth’s Seatbelt Challenge Team. The stenciling is just one part of a nine-month campaign to promote seatbelt awareness among teen drivers.
The project is part of a Rice County Safe Communities (RCSC) and SE Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths countywide effort aimed at reducing fatalities and serious injuries due to not wearing seatbelts. RCSC spearheaded the project that began in the fall at four high schools in Rice County. Kathy Cooper, RCSC Coordinator, worked diligently with student teams at each location to plan and promote the seatbelt messages and activities.
RCSC is funded through a State of Minnesota Department of Traffic Safety- Toward Zero Deaths grant.
